So Catholics can't be Evangelists !

I first need to say that I started this blog yesterday because of Hugh Hewitt. I had no idea I would be criticizing him today.

Today Hugh Hewitt stated on his national radio program that Catholics aren't evangelists. What is an evangelist? It is someone who takes the Great commission (Mt 21:19) and puts it to practice. It does not mean necessarily that you are the greatest preacher. Being an evangelist is dependent upon what you do!

Take Mother Teresa for example. She brought people to Christ without saying a word. Was she afraid to preach? No! Take her commencement speech to Harvard where she employed the academics and students there to change their lives, and she received a standing ovation. It isn't because of her words, but because of her actions that they listened to her. Hugh Hewitt would be booed of the stage if he gave the same speech.

Other Catholic Evangelists would be John Paul II. Try reading Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life.) He has been a prolific and constant proclaimer of the the Gospel for all his life.

Remember the words attributed to St Francis of Assisi, "Always preach the Gospel, and if necessary use words."

Check out Karl Keating who founded Catholic Answers. Check out Scott Hahn who is a former protestant minister and is setting Catholic Laity on fire with a zeal for spreading the truth of the Catholic Church and a love of the Bible the Christ gave us through his Church. Go to St Joseph's Communications where you will find a multitude of Catholic evangelists on hudreds of topics in spreading the truth.

You know Hugh, without the Franciscans evangelistic efforts in the world you may not recognize your beautiful California, or have a cross in the Los Angeles County Seal that needs to be removed.

Wake up Hugh! We Catholics know how to Evangelize. With almost 2000 years of practice you have some Catching up to do.
